What is Pottery?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Pottery is created by molding a ceramic shape which is later\nheated at high temperatures for the hardening and setting of shape. This\nprocess also includes sourcing, crushing, mixing, kneading, potter\u2019s wheel and\nlastly, firing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It starts with the potter\u2019s sourcing the clay material\n(which comes from the earth itself) from local towns, villages. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kneading or wedging helps to remove air bubbles from the\nclay which makes it easier to work with. Potters then use the potters\u2019 wheel to\ncreate whichever shape required by spinning the wheel into objects\nlike diyas, pots (matkas) or wall hangings. After it has been\nshaped, it is left to dry, fired and then painted and decorated for commercial\npurposes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

History of Goan\nPottery<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Pottery is one of Goa\u2019s oldest craft. Several decades before it was recorded in history, Goan potters have been known to provide temples with clay lamps and cooking vessels. It was they who brought fresh food supplies, drinking, and cooking vessels for mass meals. Fresh clay vessels were considered pure by their very nature. As they were wielded out of the earth, water, and fire 3 basic elements that support life. They held a prominent status in Goan society.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the tradition of pottery, it is acceptable for men to use\nthe potter\u2019s wheel at any point of their working life, but women potters must\ncreate these beautiful objects by hand without the help of the wheel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Once a glorious profession has turned into a hand-to-mouth\nexistence for many potters. Even though the history of clay dates back to\n9,000-10,000 BC at the time when clay vessels were used to store food and\nwater, it is believed that the art of pottery is as old as humankind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
