Ceramicware: Pros And Cons

Back in the day, people relied on Teflon coating for non-stick cookware, but as technology advances, the coatings for non-stick cookware have also developed rapidly. Alternatives to Teflon began to make their way into the market in order to provide consumers with greener and safer options. After all, Teflon is known to release toxic fumes when heated to a certain temperature.

As this became common-knowledge people desperately started looking for a safer alternative, that’s when ceramic cookware began to dominate the market. But should you just jump in and throw away all your Teflon cookware? Let’s us first look weigh in the pros and cons

Ceramic Cookware: Pros

Ceramicware like every product out there has it’s good and bad. So, before diving in and replacing all your cookware with ceramic ones take a look at the pros:

Non-Toxic

Like Thermalon, the ceramic coating is made of natural minerals. Thermalon’s non-stick layer is derived from the sand that goes through a manufacturing process that does not use PFAS or PFOA. Because it is made from natural minerals, the coating also has no lead or cadmium.

What this means is that there are no toxic fumes to breathe in when you overheat your pan. Overheating is a common occurrence when cooking and sometimes, it can be hard to resist cranking up the heat, especially when we are in a hurry. So, unlike Teflon, the ingredients that go into the non-stick ceramic coating are natural and the result is toxic-free cookware that does not release fumes that could be harmful to the environment as well as your health.

Non-Stick

Even without the use of toxic chemicals, the cooking surface of the ceramic cookware remains slick and smooth. There are plenty of commercials that show how easy it is to cook using this type of cookware. You can scope out food with little to no oil. While you can also fry eggs with stainless steel pans without sticking, you do need to use enough oil or butter to cover the whole cooking surface. If you’re into eating healthy and less greasy then ceramic cookware is certainly for you

Easy To Clean

When there’s no food stuck on the pan it becomes extremely easy to clean up. Just a simple wipe with a damp cloth after cooking will be able to get rid of all the residues. Scrubbing isn’t needed when it comes to washing.

Affordable

Compared to any cookware out their ceramic cookware is most affordable. They can range from Rs. 500-100.

Of course, there are a few expensive ones too that will range above 2000.

Ceramic Cookware: Cons

Short Lifespan

There are generally complaints when it comes to the durability of the non-stick ceramic coating. It tends to wear off quicker even when plenty of oil is used. There is still much room for improvement in this area given the frequency of the complaints across all brand names. Teflon over time leads to the same tear leaving the cookware useless.

Flimsy

Ceramic cookware is lightweight, if they are tri-ply construction, they tend to be on the thinner side. Even with the cheap ones, you will get a flimsy feel

Lightweight, however, isn’t all bad because some people prefer it as they are easier to handle. With solid cookware, it tends to get heavy when it’s filled with food.

Having said that though, some people do prefer lightweight cookware because they are easier to handle. When filled with food solid cookware tend to get heavy.

Handwash Recommended

You may own ceramic cookware sets that claim to be dishwasher safe, it is highly recommended to wash them with hands to prolong the longevity of the coating. You may not be able to claim warranty if you face problems with coating after putting it into a dishwasher.

Low To Medium Heat Only

With ceramic cookware, you must use it on low to medium heat only. High heat can damage the coating, and this curbs the flexibility to crank up the heat for certain recipes or when you are in a hurry. No doubt different types of pans are best for different uses. You have limitations when it comes to heat levels, which means you require stainless steel pans in your kitchen for certain foods.
